Thursday February 27th, 10-11:30 am at Goethe-Institut Finnland (Salomonkatu 5 B, Helsinki).
We would like to invite you to this year’s first Breakfast@Goethe with Karina Griffith and Maryan Abdulkarim. Karina and Maryan met in a feminist retreat organized by Goethe-Institut Finnland and SAVVY Contemporary in 2018. Now re-meeting they will talk about various themes around their work on intersectionality and inclusion, focusing concretely on multilingualism.
The films and installations of Berlin-based Karina Griffith explore the themes of fear and fantasy, often focusing on how they relate to belonging. Her interests include exploring the intricacies of identity and the immigrant perspective while acting as a record of her family’s unique way of Caribbean Patois storytelling. Her research at the University of Toronto’s Cinema Studies Institute focuses on Black authorship in German cinema and interacts with theories of affect, intersectionality and creolization. She currently researches on different aspects of failure, and will be spending a month in HIAP residency in Helsinki.
Maryan Abdulkarim is a writer and artist based in Helsinki. Her work focuses around the themes of inclusion and freedom. Abdulkarim works in collectives. Currently she is working on a photography book project with documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and photographer Uwa Iduozee about the histories of Afrofinns.
