Multilingual Month is a series of events open to all. The events and projects are united by the fact that, in one way or another, they take into account linguistic diversity and the importance of mother tongues.

Libraries can participate by, for example, giving reading tips related to the topic, organising exhibitions of relevant materials and holding multilingual fairy tale readings. Museums can organise workshops, guided tours or discussion events in different languages.

Schools can participate through theme days, exhibitions, various workshops or group work or by inviting multilingualism experts to give presentations. Other cultural actors are also welcome to participate with similar programmes.

The organisations and actors participating in Multilingual Month implement the events with their own funding. The organising bodies are responsible for their own communications and must publish their events through the website www.satakielikuukausi.fi.

You can also participate by sharing materials, images, texts or reflections related to multilingualism on social media using the hashtags #Satakielikuukausi #MultilingualMonth #FlerspråkighetsMånaden #Flerspråkighet #monikielisyys

Multilingual Month / Satakielikuukausi celebrates language diversity Feb 21st – March 21st

This year Multilingual Month is celebrated in Finland for the 12th time!

Satakielikuukausi – Multilingual Month is an annual celebration of language diversity, spreading to cultural centers, libraries, schools, and homes across Finland. Multilingual Month begins on the International Mother Language Day on the 21st of February, and ends on the World Poetry Day, 21st of March which is also the United Nations Day Against Racism. Multilingual Month encourages us to look at the significance of native language and multilingualism through art, participation, and coming together.

The diverse program consists of for example presentations, discussions, storytelling, exhibitions, and workshops. Through art and culture, the events highlight the richness of language diversity, explore building one’s identity through language, and create opportunities for mutual encounters across language boundaries. The Satakielikuukausi website as well as the Satakielikuukausi Facebook page publishes information on the theme month’s events. All events registered to Multilingual Month will be published on the website by 20th of February.

Exhibitions, storytelling for children, and other events are organized around Finland, from the capital region to Rovaniemi and from Kuopio to Seinäjoki.

Examples of the program:

  • Bilingual book publication and storytelling by author Nataliia Deineka, on 21st of February at 12–13, Kuopio City Library.
  • Easy Finnish guided tours 24th of January–17th of March, accompanied by a peer guide in Arabic and Kurdish, as well as Azerbaijani, Turkish and Russian, supporting multilingualism. Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately this event is cancelled: The mysterious inhabitants of the library! – exhibition supports multilingualism by presenting children’s self-produced stories and pictures in their own native languages. 23rd of February–1st of March, Ikaalinen City Library.
